Where We Came From

GVFD in 1963

Our fire department is what it is today because our firemen have worked hard, sweated and gave up much pleasure, time and self to make it possible.

Following are some highlights for you that show that equipment, materials, etc., did not come all at once or easy, but through each ones effort and desire.

At the first meeting of the Greentown Civic Association (Jan. 24th, 1938) the fire department got started. A fire department fund was kept separate from regular funds. The Civic President, Clarence Holben, appointed David Yenny and Howard (Tommy) Roth to find the cost for a suitable fire truck.
In 1938, we nominated our directors for the fired department and we started our first regular meetings in which we made an agreement with North Canton for fire runs.
In May, 1939 we purchased a lot from the Weary Estate and started plans to build our fire house. By the end of the year, our building was finished.
In 1940, we purchased twenty-four fire buckets to be used in a bucket brigade if needed.

Since October 1938 to 1963 we have come a long way but it is just the beginning – for the growth of our fire department can be described in just two words – TEAM WORK.

The Greentown Volunteer Fire Department team of part time and volunteer firefighters is comprised of your neighbors, your friends and maybe even your relatives. They’re people just like you – with families, jobs and active lifestyles who still find time to give back to their community. Greentown offers a family friendly environment and provides training opportunities for those looking to expand their knowledge and experiences.

Established in 1938, the Greentown Volunteer Fire Department is a premier provider of emergency services in Lake Township – protecting residents and businesses in our primary response area. Greentown also provides mutual aid for the surrounding areas.

We provide comprehensive firefighting, extrication, rescue, fire prevention education and emergency medical services from our station at 10100 Cleveland Ave NW, Uniontown, OH 44685, which makes us a convenient place to work for anyone in or near Stark and Summit counties.

We are a combination fire & EMS non-profit organization, with 24 hour a day 7 day a week staffing.

We take emergency services very seriously. Our staff is here to serve their community, our part time staff and volunteers realize that the services the department provides are a critical component of the life saving services available to the citizens of our communities. We must be committed to providing our services 24/7/365.

The department currently maintains a ladder truck, two engines with one engine capable of holding 2500 gallons of water to be utilized as a tanker truck, two ALS support ambulances, one command support vehicle and one utility brush fire truck.

GVFD’s membership is made up of approximately 45 active fire, EMS and administrative/support and volunteers. We are backed by an extensive network of community members and alumni nationwide. We offer a long list of benefits including in-house, local and national training, flexible duty assignments, member incentives and events — and most importantly a friendly, fun, professional atmosphere where you’ll find a second family.
